Just a quick note to share that I ditched the Nokia 8110 4g and got myself a @Fairphone 3. The Nokia was too limited for what I usually need a smart phone for. And I really support what stands for. Going to test the Nokia as a portable wifi Hotspot for the car.

Overal, the Nokia 8110 4g experience has been very disappointing. The software really is unfinished and now the SDcard slot seems to be broken. It's only good for placing and receiving calls. Nothing a €16 phone couldn't do as well.

Nokia 8110 4G Requests - Part 1

Nokia 8110 4G banana yellow and black side to side

Gathering a list of issues and changes I would like to see fixed on my 4G phone.

Most of these issues can be fixed with a hypothetical software update. So it's up to HMD Global (@NokiaMobile) to work on the apps and system software on the phone and release a new update - preferably sooner than later.

And the WhatsApp integration should be implemented by Facebook Team WhatsApp of course.

List of software nuisances:

  • WhatsApp is running on the phone, but is lacking in these ways:
    • No https://web.whatsapp.com support, even-though the phone has a QR-reading-cabable camera on board
    • Received videos have a maximum file size of 8MB, so anything bigger than that cannot be opened, at all. Memory limitations?
    • No calling
    • No video chat
  • No emoji input - This makes me really sad. 😅
  • No CalDAV and CardDav sync support - would have been great to be able to easily synchronize contacts outside of Google or Apple sync.
  • The volume controls are practically useless as the phone has three volume settings even-though it has a scale from vibrate to 15, the actual volume stages are "Really Loud", "Loud" or "vibrate".
  • The phone gets really hot during calls - not sure if software or hardware related to be honest.

It would be awesome if this list could be marked off soon.

@berendj What happened to the Nokia 8110?

Fixed the very small screen (240px) Layout issues in my Known template in case anyone might accidentally open my site on their Nokia 8110 4g browser...

Wrote to Web support regarding getting WhatsApp Web on the powered 8110 4G:

Hello Dear WhatsApp for KaiOS Developers!

Thank you first of all for your efforts and trouble making WhatsApp
available on the Nokia 8110 4G! It's amazing how capable a device like
this little phone can be
On the other hand however I am missing gravely the integration of
WhatsApp Web with the phone, especially since the keyboard and text
input experience is somewhat... bad.
Something I don't really understand as the hardware is there. The phone
has a capable camera to read the QR code.
So I was wondering, what's the holdup to release this SUPER DUPER useful
feature in the next release of WhatsApp for KaiOS?

Thanks for listening en keep on rocking!

Cheers,

Johan from Düsseldorf, Germany

Note-To-Self : use voice recording

1 min read

So the T9 keypad on the 8110 4G is, to put it gently, not great - even-though I am getting used to the awkward way of writing words and sentences - hey, who needs punctuation anyway; but on the plus side, the installed voice recorder app always me to take "note to self" - style voice memos which are recorded in 8kbit or 44kbit and saved as .opus audio files on the sd-card - et voila - hands-free memos! Added bonus: hearing my own voice gets less weird over time and it also helps me formulate my thoughts better. Digging this low-tech setup!

Getting the 8110 4G and its MP3 player which can only get music by copying from the PC over USB made me revisit Media Monkey as the great library tool it was and still is and brought me back to my music library. Getting the feelings of the good old days back when I used to DJ regularly.
