Mauve - Comparing Peer to Peer Protocols

This post will compare several peer to peer protocols by looking at how they work and the tradeoffs that one should consider when choosing one of them. We will specifically be looking at BitTorrent, IPFS, Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB) and Hypercore.

If you don't have Agregore or Beakerbrowser yet, you can read the same post on HTTP here https://blog.mauve.moe/posts/protocol-comparisons

Or if you're using IPFS you can find the current version of this page here: https://bafybeie2dbhtyytxvmkrzzwk7jvcyideqklsszsq2gta6jvc64mnlxst2u.ipfs.dweb.link/?filename=protoco...https://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmYiAzdb4q5QnvahGPeDuiCHjGMC5vrrdbH8M7y57D8rs6?filename=protocol-comparisonshttps://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmYiAzdb4q5QnvahGPeDuiCHjGMC5vrrdbH8M7y57D8rs6?filename=protocol-comparisonshttps://ipfs.io/ipfs/QmYiAzdb4q5QnvahGPeDuiCHjGMC5vrrdbH8M7y57D8rs6?filename=protocol-comparisons

Having fun in looking up semi-random things as it if was and it's really cool how many "hits" it comes back with. It's mind-blowing that all that information is already on my machine thanks to the magic that is.

Introduction · GitBook

This site is primarily for onboarding technical people and developers into knowledge of the SSB protocol and orientations from the conceptual to the practical aspects of writing and using SSB based applications.

If you would like to view a less technical and friendlier introduction to SSB, please visit scuttlebutt.nz/docs.

maximum call stack exceeded, then sbot is missing · Issue #957 · ssbc/patchwork · GitHub

The steps described by Christian Bundy help me restore the corrupted stream data in my Scuttlebutt "server" data today.

Are you able to use any version of ssb-server or Patchwork? This looks to me like your flumedb views are corrupted (see flumedb/flumedb#32), but I've only ever personally seen this when running my flumedb deletion scripts. You can regenerate all of your views by deleting everything in ~/.ssb/flume/ except for log.offset, but I might make a backup so that we can try to debug them. Sorry, that's a total pain for Scuttlebutt to just randomly explode without warning, hopefully just moving/removing your view files will help? I'm sure you already know, but I'd recommend that you make a backup of ~/.ssb/secret and ~/.ssb/gossip.json before running rm anywhere near your SSB folder. It wouldn't hurt to make a backup of ~/.ssb/flume/log.offset either, but it's not quite as important as the first two.

I dream of a Digital World without passwords

1 min read

In a perfect World I would be able to access all my digital assets without having to enter a password or even authenticate manually.

One of the best parts of is the fact I only need a secret key file to access my content. The file is literally my access key to all my own SSB stuff.

No need to remember any crazy character combination or even having to register for an email account. I have an SSB and a secret and that’s all that should be necessary.

Having said that, being able to restore my account on with the “recovery phrase” does make sense since mobile operating system have terrible file access management.

Thank you dear community to make this dream become a little more reality.

ps. Since I can authenticate to my PC with my own face (Windows Hello), I really do not need to enter login and password to jump right into Patchwork.

Kawaiipunk on Secure Scuttlebutt described the SSB platform in a very interesting way:

> A solarpunk off-grid peer to peer social network. It’s like Facebook/Twitter but without the need for any company. You just connect directly to your friends.

Secure Scuttlebutt First Impressions

1 min read

I've been dugg into Secure Scuttlebutt and Dat since a couple of weeks. This peer-to-peer Internet of Humans (and bots) is intriguing. The community is very friendly and the open-source software projects and implementations inspiring. My wish would be that it would be even easier to get friends and family on to Scuttlebutt (or SSB). There are still some technical hurdles to overcome. But I believe the future looks bright!

Uninstalled the ManyVerse applications from Android and IOS. Couldn't get the messages to sync anymore. Not even on a local WLAN network. Spent quite a bit of time testing and reinstalling. In the end it didn't work and I was getting weird content on my phones. Especially with the work phone I need to be more in control what gets saved on it. Wondering though that uninstalling the app also removes the SSB folder? Going to try to write up some report of my experience with the app. Looking at the alternative Sunrise Choir Scuttlebutt Android app.
Hopefully that app will be ready for the PlayStore soon.

Dark Crystal | Back up your secrets using the trust in your social fabric

Dark Crystal transforms secrets into crystal shards that you can send to trusted friends. If you lose the secret, or something happens to you, your friends can combine the shards to recover the crystal and reveal the secret.

Dark Crystal uses cryptography so that no individual shard reveals anything about your secret on its own. Your secret is only revealed if the people you chose cooperate and put their shards together.
