First game experience today was pretty cool. Did the "Sanctum" game with a bunch of colleagues and afterwards some arcade games. Having the headset on for longer than 50 minutes started bothering me a bit, but the games kept me from being too distracted by it.

How anyone can play - realistic - war games as a form of "entertainment" is really beyond comprehension. Do something useful with your time!

Flood Destruction

Do not trust your basement

2 min read

Seeing that devastated family house basement left a big impression on me. The destruction level of a flooded basement full of family memories was really high. 99% of everything in that basement is lost after a couple weeks in dirty, mucky river water and slick. Furniture destroyed after it floated freely in the dark water. When the water eventually recided, all of the stuff, even the heavy furniture pieces, got thrown around the rooms. A photo projector and dias, all in there containers, probably 40 years old, all destroyed. Photo albums completely returned to sticky pulp as the water dissolved the paper. When you try to pick it up, it all falls apart. Old board games, puzzle pieces, even a whole set of the classic electronic Battlefield game, all scattered around the water and covered in muck. The pieces kept coming towards the vacuum cleaner head while I was working to suck out the lower levels of the basement. We managed to get about 100 buckets of stinky dark river water out. Books were everywhere and also completely destroyed. It really hurt me emotionally to see all these family memoriabilia scattered and destroyed like that. Perhaps as a dad, it is one of my worst nightmares that our family memories would be returned to only that ... memories which eventually will be all forgotten and lost.

Never keep your precious things in your basement!

Will the UEFA be responsible for nobody wearing a mask at the Eurocup games when the infection rates sky-rocket - allover again?

Johan Bové

I don't really get the entertainment value of passively watching other people playing games.

Got an external Lenovo Compact USB keyboard and really trying hard to get used to using the TrackPoint instead of a separate mouse. It works well as I'm not playing any games anyway. Only in day two. This is my first Lenovo style keyboard. I always wanted one. It takes a bit of getting used to. Keep mixing up fn and left-ctrl keys and missing lit up keys a bit. Let's give this a week and see how I progress.

Note: Making Beaker OS a reality

Gathering ideas and basic requirements

1 min read

Actually: Beaker OS would be very similar to Google's Chrome OS which installs on many laptops. What would be necessary to make Beaker OS "bootable" ?

A list of basic applications any computer should have

  • Editor: check: basic text editor and coding IDE (similar to VScode)
  • Browser: check; similar to Chromium, without the extensions. Also issues with accessibility and internationalization.
  • Application platform: check
  • Address book: how would we integrate non-beaker profiles in the address book?
  • Calendar: CalDav, web client
  • Message client (email): web client
  • File Manager: check, but issues with syncing with OS FUSE and Hyperdrive
  • Terminal: check, and extensible with "Web Term Commands"
  • Media player: some examples: Winamp player, video player?
  • Photo Management: creating a photo gallery is easy. Web client?
  • Chat client: IRCCloud, web clients
  • "Office-like" applications: spreadsheet, editor, presentations: offline working spreadsheet?
  • Games: many web games already out there. Some multi-player using Beaker api?
  • Remote Desktop Client: not sure how this would work.

A lot of kids friendly apps and games will see peak download and usage stats in the next month

@Signalnoise The graphics were amazing. I only learned now, through this article, that Nintendo did clever pre-rendering of the sprites to achieve the 3D like quality. See https://rec.games.video.classic.narkive.com/w9TyVByJ/did-the-donkey-kong-country-games-use-special-c...

Werner Goeman

My mom's brother Werner only became 41. He died on December 26, 1995 after a short intense battle with lung cancer. He was a heavy smoker. I remember him mostly as a DJ and a computer wizard. I remember he had boxes full of diskettes filled with early PC games. I wonder now if he posted anything on a BBS at the time or had his own Gopher site or even an early HTML website. I wish he was alive now and could observe how the Internet grew to what it is today and how computing power encreased exponentially. I wish he could be here today so I could share with him what I do a for a living as a Web developer and to be able to share good music. In 1995 I was only 15 years old and was not into PC much yet. Cancer sucks.
