St. Baldrick's Foundation

Conquer childhood cancers

St. Baldrick's Foundation began in 2000 as a challenge between friends and has since grown into the world's largest volunteer-powered, donor centered fundraising program for childhood cancer research. The Foundation now funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government. Its signature head-shaving events are coordinated worldwide, where volunteers get bald to stand in solidarity with kids with cancer and raise money to support lifesaving research. Since its start, nearly 450,000 shavees, including over 59,000 women, have shaved their heads at more than 10,000 head-shaving events in 25 countries and 50 U.S. states. St. Baldrick's has committed more than $200 million since 2005 to fund local institutions as well as cooperative research on a national scale to help doctors work together to develop the best treatments for all children with cancer.

Keeping on mirroring the data of Bellingcat's Ukraine Timemap. I'm only seeing the notes in the JSON file for each of the events and it's terrifying.

What is Global Authentication Project?

1 min read

The Global Authentication Project consists of a wide community of open source researchers assisting in Bellingcat research through structured tasks and feedback. For this dataset, we are working with many individuals who have Ukrainian language skills and others with local contextual knowledge of the events and places seen on the map. Other participants include individuals skilled in geolocation and chronolocation, with all contributions being vetted by Bellingcat researchers.

The aim of this project is to detail incidents where there is open source evidence of potential civilian harm in Ukraine, as well as attempting to clarify where and when such events took place. Documenting these incidents is important given claims by the Russian government in particular that it is not seeking to attack civilians and avoid impacting civilian infrastructure.

Read more about it on Bellingcat's announcement.

The online volunteers hunting for war crimes in Ukraine

Even if the war ended tomorrow, prosecution of Vladimir Putin or any Russian commanders involved in war crimes would take years, if it happens at all. Building a case would require that investigators geolocate and verify all digital evidence.

What could speed this timeline up is the legion of people around the world who are willing and able to do such work, thanks in part to the experience of documenting the events of January 6, 2021, in the US.

Realized that Octonauts takes place in the far future of the timeline that started with the events of Sweet Tooth.

How to fix target=”_blank” links: a security and performance issue in web pages

Almost every web page has links which open in a new tab leaving the other web page still available. For example, news agencies will tweet about recent events on Twitter: the tweet contains a short description of the article and a link to see the full story on their web page. internet, javascript, security, syndicated, web

Agenda - Dat Conference 2020

Dat is a community ecosystem of peer-to-peer projects. They build on a shared set of technologies called the Hypercore protocol.

In this first, virtual Dat conference, we want to connect people involved in the community and in the surrounding space. We’ll provide the infrastructure, a website and a schedule, and we’ll try to assist with technical needs for special sessions.

How To Fix Everything That's Wrong With the Internet

What do Google, Facebook, Youtube, Amazon, Uber and a phone book have in common? They are indexes — searchable lists of stuff. Google is a list of keywords mapped to the websites they appear in. Facebook is a list of profiles, posts, private messages, events and other types of information. decentralization, internet, syndicated, web

Dat Conference 2020

Virtual peer to peer event about local-first tech and meetup space for everyone interested in the decentralized web.

Location: https://events.dat.foundation/2020/

Ends:

Time Zone: Europe/Berlin (GMT +02:00)

Dat is a community ecosystem of peer-to-peer projects. They build on a shared set of technologies called the Hypercore protocol.

In this first, virtual Dat conference, we want to connect people involved in the community and in the surrounding space. We’ll provide the infrastructure, a website and a schedule, and we’ll try to assist with technical needs for special sessions.

However, filling this space will be up to all of you, the participants! If you want to do introductions and presentations there will be a channel dedicated just for showing looped, pre-recorded videos. For the actual conference, we’re looking for all kinds of ideas such as sessions on how to foster collaboration, inclusiveness and knowledge sharing, thoughts on experimentation and other discussions. Potential formats could include workshops, technical deep dives, VR meetups, collaborative livecoding - be creative!

Let’s share our approaches and talk about the present and the future of local-first technology and applications.

Ditching Event Platforms for the IndieWeb · Jamie Tanna | Software (Quality) Engineer

Great introduction on how to add events to your own website. Reminded me of the time when I was intensively working for years on my now defunct PartyOn Event Calendar website. The site lost against FB and co, when everyone  moved their events to the FB silo.

Wow, since I took the plunge into the , I have been a little overwhelmed by the wealth of articles, open-source apps and inspiring events organized by the Indieweb Community. Still catching up about the last three years worth of content though. Slowly getting there.
