Flood Destruction

Do not trust your basement

2 min read

Seeing that devastated family house basement left a big impression on me. The destruction level of a flooded basement full of family memories was really high. 99% of everything in that basement is lost after a couple weeks in dirty, mucky river water and slick. Furniture destroyed after it floated freely in the dark water. When the water eventually recided, all of the stuff, even the heavy furniture pieces, got thrown around the rooms. A photo projector and dias, all in there containers, probably 40 years old, all destroyed. Photo albums completely returned to sticky pulp as the water dissolved the paper. When you try to pick it up, it all falls apart. Old board games, puzzle pieces, even a whole set of the classic electronic Battlefield game, all scattered around the water and covered in muck. The pieces kept coming towards the vacuum cleaner head while I was working to suck out the lower levels of the basement. We managed to get about 100 buckets of stinky dark river water out. Books were everywhere and also completely destroyed. It really hurt me emotionally to see all these family memoriabilia scattered and destroyed like that. Perhaps as a dad, it is one of my worst nightmares that our family memories would be returned to only that ... memories which eventually will be all forgotten and lost.

Never keep your precious things in your basement!

Journal Update

The news and measures about the corona virus are giving me anxiety caused nightmares. I feel genuinely scared about what is happening. Worried about my family and my friends and colleagues. Worried that we might not have enough supplies. Worried about how the World As We Knew it is over. Perhaps I've seen too many apocalyptic movies and TV.

I've been away from the office at home for five weeks now. Working from home was okay until my son couldn't go to the kindergarten anymore and then last Friday, my laptop broke. I got the machine replaced. Hopefully I can be somewhat productive again today.

We're together in this until at least April 16th when the schools can reopen. Today is March 17th. A complete lock down of Germany might still happen. For how long is totally unclear? I need to make an inventory of the food and supplies in the house.

Nathan is great and developing. He's also starting to talk much more. And he even formed little sentences. It is however tough keeping him busy without simply turning on the TV. Worried what this is doing to his development?

Secure Scuttlebutt First Impressions

1 min read

I've been dugg into Secure Scuttlebutt and Dat since a couple of weeks. This peer-to-peer Internet of Humans (and bots) is intriguing. The community is very friendly and the open-source software projects and implementations inspiring. My wish would be that it would be even easier to get friends and family on to Scuttlebutt (or SSB). There are still some technical hurdles to overcome. But I believe the future looks bright!
