Dave Mills Stories

Dave Mills was known as Father Time as one of the people behind the NTP, or Internet time protocol

Seems like the Mastodon POSSE from my Known site is borked. Argh. Something to fix again this week.

And the "Twitter profile linking is my online identity" is even worse for authors, for example https://www.refactoringui.com/, where Adam Wathan and Steve Schoger's identities can only be known to people already on Twitter.
But to be fair, this site is from the times when being on Twitter was still considered cool and a public good.

Reading "The Shape Of Things to Come" and realizing just how lucky I am to have known no war in my younger life. That's all I wish for, that my son gets a chance to live his life full and content at least for as long as I have.

To do: fix Known CMS to actually post the full content on longer status updates to Mastodon, so I don't look like I am spamming links back to my own website so much.

Who do you trust more to manage your private mobile devices, to provide security and theft protection? A global well-known company offering services for free, but in return of access to your accounts, or a smaller, not so well known, privately held company which you pay a monthly fee for?

Hyperlinks are a powerful tool for journalists and their readers. Diving deep into the context of an article is just a click away. But hyperlinks are a double-edged sword; for all of the internet’s boundlessness, what’s found on the web can also be modified, moved, or entirely disappeared. This often-irreversible decay of web content is commonly known as linkrot. It comes with a similar problem of content drift, or the often-unannounced changes––retractions, additions, replacement––to the content at a particular URL.

Nice to see you got Known working James and great write-up!

writes down their thoughts and notes in a file before tooting / tweeting them? Kind of like adding a cooling down phase before publicly posting? I use my Known CMS site for this too.

Johan Bové

hmm, somehow I can't reply on posts on Mastodon from my Known site. Will have to dig up ye old error logs.

Looking for a new desktop or laptop? Perhaps you don't really need a new device at all? I can highly recommend the machines offered by GreenPanda, known by some from the Reteq certificates. No affiliation here or commission. Just a happy customer who wants to contribute his share in lowering the amount of Co2 in the air. https://www.greenpanda.de/

Hi Tilman, about the "unfurl" URLS - I must admit I'm not sure entirely how it works. The Known CMS I use was prepared mostly by Marcus Povey (https://github.com/mapkyca) and was build by other developers. I only changed the template a bit. I will have a look in the source code and see if I can dig up how it works.
There is also an article here about what "unfurling" is about https://indieweb.org/link-preview

All of the Known source code can be found here: https://github.com/idno/known

Update:

So as I understand it, the Known PHP system will parse through post body content and it will find URLS to external sites. The application will then do a get request to the external link and it will parse the response it will get back and it will look for any "schematic" data it can find, mostly micro-formats.

I've only gotten to set up annotations on my private site yesterday. Next step will be to be able to send annotations through my Known site.

Syndicating the posts from my site now also to the on my new profile thanks to the Known plugin: https://github.com/danito/KnownMastodon

Thank you for the tip Jonathan! Danito's "KnownMastodon" plug-in still works fine on Known v1.2.4.

I'm trying to avoid following accounts on Twitter with thousands of followers in preference to people I know and have less followers. The tweets of very popular accounts will pass through your timeline eventually anyway through your network. This way the algorithm makes some space for the lesser known people who also have interesting things to say.

The Indieweb wiki page on Bookmark (https://indieweb.org/bookmark) does not refer to how to organize bookmarks really. It comes down to personal preference obviously. I'm using the "bookmarks" in Known CMS as a form of "read later" functionality or this "is interesting". When I actively want to endorse something I "like" the thing so it gets a little boosted. Being to sort bookmarks in folders in a browser feels a little old-school. Wondering if Brave allows organizing bookmarks using tags?

Johan Bové

Testing a new browser gave me the incentive and opportunity to clean up my pile of "bookmarks". Wondering how most people use and organise their browser ? Do you keep everything in separate folders? Never gotten around in using one of those "pinning" services, even-though I've been "bookmarking" interesting things using my "Known CMS" site, but I don't organise those properly using tags.

Maybe we shouldn't want a fully decentralized web

I spent a large part of 2019 working with the distributed and decentralized web, especially IPFS, also known as the “Inter-Planetary File System”. I’ve written a few articles on the topic, on how you can host a web app on IPFS, one of which even ended up on the front page of HackerNews. decentralization, syndicated
